Logan
I used to live with Logan when he was just a little baby, and now he’s 11 years old. I’ve always bugged him about watching too much television and playing video games, so whenever I see Logan, I always make sure to get outdoors with him. Whether it’s playing basketball, baseball, fishing or going to the beach, it’s gotten to the point where Logan knows to turn the video games off when I’m around. I’m not going to come out and bash the kids of today. However, I’ve noticed video games and television play a major role in a lot of kids’ lives. Hey, I have my own addictions such as sports and betting on them, and in today’s world of technology, there’s a game on any time of the day, so I also watch more television than I should.
This past weekend Logan came down from Quadra Island with his mom and dad for a couple of days. I informed Logan we would be going trout fishing at 7:00 am the following day. 7:00 am came early for him, and he spent the first half hour of the morning in a bit of a daze. Logan made his first cast of the day around 8:00 am, and we were looking at about a four-hour window to get as much fishing in as possible. My neighbor Adam was also along for the trip, and we were fly-fishing alongside Logan who was casting. As the morning wore on, I could feel Logan’s urge to get back indoors growing.
The first big tangle started to pave the road home. The rain began to fall harder and the air became colder. However, Logan seemed to make a mental come back. He began launching his lure on a consistent basis, and it seemed to be turning around, but the cold and rain managed to succeed in breaking the little guy’s will. Soon the rod found itself fishing the lake. We all got in the van and headed home to warm up and get some food. Logan immediately put on a movie and hit the couch.
It drives me nuts seeing kids inside playing video games and watching T.V. When I was a kid, my buddies and I would be riding bikes, building forts, skateboarding, fishing and whatever. I’ve always bugged Logan about not doing these things. Later that night, Logan brought up that he wants to make video games for a living. I could see his eyes light up when he talked about the idea, and my opinion instantly changed. This is something this kid obviously loves, and he wants to take that passion and run with it. Honestly, I felt horrible about bugging him for playing video games. I will continue to drag Logan outside whenever I can, but I will lighten up on ripping him for playing video games. In the end, as long as Logan’s happy then so am I.

Interesting observations Greg.
I love the shot of the “rod fishing the lake”
Is that your game controller hitched to the TV?
