The web of logging roads on Vancouver Island provides access to some interesting places. I have explored a fair bit of these roads in the last years and the places you can reach never cease to amaze me. It’s like the ultimate adventure, going up or down a dirt road, without an idea what will be at the end of... »

“Look at those prints, they look really fresh. Usually when I’m out here by myself I sing the dumbest songs just to make noise. I figure if a Cougar can hear me coming, the sound will scare it off. Stop! What was that?”
There are many people who call themselves fishermen. However, very few make it a lifestyle. Simply walking to... »

I can’t tell you what Sointula is. I can’t give you a definition. There wasn’t a single moment that defined Sointula for me. Still, after visiting the island once and then again for a longer time, I can’t figure it out. Sointula wouldn’t be watching for whales in Beautiful Bay, or a storm ripping through the treetops, which poke into... »

One of the best places to explore, close to Victoria, is without a doubt East Sooke Regional Park. It is like a taste of the Wild West Coast of Vancouver Island, close to civilization. The park is a 30 minutes drive from downtown Victoria, a short drive through beautiful Metchosin. Rocky Point Road will lead you to this beautiful park.

Eldorado Canyon offers some of the best rock-climbing anywhere. The steep, hard, red-hued sandstone conglomerate walls carved out over millions of years by what we now refer to as South Boulder Creek, rise out of the floor of the canyon to heights of 700 feet. “Eldo” has everything from the ultra classic Bastille Crack, a moderate, 5 pitch, 5.7 that... »

I had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful Island recently and used the oppurtunity to explore its many treasures. Cortes Island is reached via Campell River, the ferry ride to Quadra Island is only 10 minutes, a quick drive gets you to Heriot Bay where the ferry to Cortes Island is docked. After a beautiful 40 minutes ferry ride you... »

I don’t know what it was that gave me an eerie feeling when we entered the campsite at Walbran Valley. Maybe the structures, thin sticks bound together without a canvas. Like skeletons or remains from another civilization. More likely it was that the entrance felt like stepping into a dark cave, especially as the sun was high in the sky,... »

If your regular fishing hole isn’t producing you must give it a break and move on. I know it’s great to go back to the well, over and over again, because you know the waters and you’re comfortable there. This past Saturday Adam and I decided that although we like our regular spot, it wasn’t producing. So, the move was... »

Juan de Fuca Marine trail is the lesser-known trail on the lower West Coast of Vancouver Island. It is beautiful, snaking through the forest and beaches from China Beach to Botanical Beach. It has many advantages to it’s bigger brother the West Coast Trail; fewer hikers, no permits and it’s closer to Victoria. I have hiked it a couple of... »

I used to live with Logan when he was just a little baby, and now he’s 11 years old. I’ve always bugged him about watching too much television and playing video games, so whenever I see Logan, I always make sure to get outdoors with him. Whether it’s playing basketball, baseball, fishing or going to the beach, it’s gotten to... »
